Choosing CBOS for your doctoral programme
The primary aim of our doctoral programme is to train and develop future academics. We have an active PhD community and our students play a full role in the Centre. We encourage and support conference attendance and publication.
We welcome applications for full-time and part-time study. Each year there are various University funding opportunities available. We also welcome applications from self-funded candidates.
All PhD students become members of the Doctoral College, which works to support and enrich the experience of our doctoral researchers.

Choosing a research area
"I’d been working in Africa and the Middle East for six or seven years before I came back to the UK, and so I wanted to do a piece of research on modern slavery and how firms from various countries were addressing the risks: what they were disclosing, how they were disclosing it and what the differences were between Qatar, Russia and the UK.
"Once I started, it changed almost immediately. I did a pilot project as part of the one-year master's at the beginning of the PhD on how universities were responding to modern slavery legislation and we found some really interesting things. The rest of the PhD turned into a look at UK public sector responses to the Modern Slavery Act."

Support and training
"Having supervisors who share your excitement is key – because that excitement is what takes you to your desk over four or five, years especially if you are doing qualitative study.
"Our PhD office provides a bright, productive, and inspiring environment and the School is home to very successful and innovative academics. Bath is a great and very supportive place to study: join us!"

Why join a Research Centre?
"CBOS was one of the main reasons I chose the School of Management . When I was researching potential places to do a PhD, CBOS was something that really attracted me.
"I was keen to be part of a research centre focused on business and society, particularly around the topics of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. That’s what I’m interested in, so I wanted a place that’s really active in terms of research, outreach and impact in that area."
